Like Wes Anderson’s new film, I will keep this review short. The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar is similar to most other Wes Anderson films. The film feels slightly confusing but takes you on a fun adventure. I enjoyed how the film is not a 1:1 of Roald Dahl’s 1977 classic, but instead reimagines the concepts of the original book. Yes, they are both very similar, but they are also different.
I truly enjoyed how the story felt as if it was told in layers. On the outside, we have Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl, telling the story of Henry Sugar. Below that, we have the story of Henry Sugar and Henry Sugar telling the story of the Doctors who discovered Imdad Kahn. Below that we have Imdad Kahn telling the story of his upbringing. These layers get confusing at times, but that confusion is what makes a Wes Anderson film.
Finally, I loved how the story kept Wes Anderson’s visual style intact. The 4:3 aspect ratio made the nuances of the characters POP. The use of both warm and cool colors contrasting each other showed all the different stories being told at once with utter perfection.
I have to say, I really did enjoy this film. There is something I dislike about the film, but when surrounded by all the stuff I did like, it’s hard to put my finger on it.
So yeah, go watch The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar on Netflix, then comment your opinion below!
A very articulate review! I just so happened to watch this last night! Did you read the original Roald Dahl book?
